Ha Giang

Ha Giang is is the place to go for a beautiful taste of the stunning mountain scenery and rural lifestyles of ethnic minorities in Vietnam’s North – without the hordes of tourists that frequent Sapa. It is Vietnam’s most Northern and least visited province, sharing 274 km of border with China. The peaceful village life experienced today belies the violence felt until early 1990s, as Ha Giang was a region of intense fighting between Vietnam and China. Today, Ha Giang offers truly breathtaking panoramas of limestone karst mountains and an insight into the bucolic lifestyles of the brightly-clad ethnic minorities living on the steep slopes. Ha Giang town, the provincial capital, is a sizeable town that straddles the Lo river and is surrounded by the striking Mo Neo and Cam mountains. Most visitors prefer to leave Ha Giang town and travel up to Meo Vac or Dong Van, two smaller towns both set in quiet valleys hemmed in by imposing peaks and connected by a hair-raising pass of spectacular scenery.
